The project focuses on developing a bacterial platform for converting methanol, a sustainable feedstock, into valuable products. By engineering Escherichia coli with a synthetic methanol assimilation pathway, it aims to enhance the efficiency of microbial processes for bio-based chemical production.
Urgent global problems, including climate change and fossil-fuel dependence, force the EU to develop sustainable bio-basedchemical production platforms.
However, current biotechnological feedstocks, such as plant-based sugars, suffer from serious limitations in terms of availability and sustainability. A very promising alternativeis the one-carbon (C1) feedstock methanol, which canbe produced in a sustainable manner from waste, or CO2 and renewable hydrogen.
