This project investigates the stability of alien chromosomes in hybrid wheat, focusing on the role of centromere function in chromosome segregation. It aims to enhance genetic diversity in wheat breeding by understanding the mechanisms behind chromosome stability.
In hybrid derivatives of bread wheat Triticum aestivum L. that include additional chromosomes from other species (aliens), the stability of these aliens varies; centromere function is responsible for segregation at mitosis and meiosis.
Our objective is to understand the cause of differential centromere activity and hence failure of regular alien chromosome segregation in such lines.
