This project investigates the evolution and regulation of Nitric Oxide Synthase genes in amphioxus to understand vertebrate ancestral functions. It aims to uncover the role of nitric oxide in various physiological processes and its implications for human health.
It is clear that a conserved set of developmental genes is shared between animals, but it is becoming even more evident that changes in gene regulation rather than changes in gene function may have been involved in the origin of morphological novelties and complexity during animal evolution.
