The project investigates negative gas adsorption, a phenomenon where certain materials release gas under increased pressure. This research aims to understand the mechanisms behind this behavior to develop innovative applications in pneumatic systems and microfluidics.
Negative gas adsorption (NGA) is a new, counterintuitive and paradoxical phenomenon, for the first timereported by my group in 2016:
Normal solid materials with significant outer or inner surface area alwaystake up gas when the pressure in the surrounding reservoir is increased (adsorption). NGA networks insteadreact at a certain point in the opposite direction:
They release gas upon external pressure increase, leading toan overall pressure amplification in a closed system.
