The SOSJelly project aims to create a biosynthetic product that protects human skin from jellyfish stings. By developing a new formulation that mimics natural defenses, the project addresses both public health concerns and potential economic impacts on tourism and fishing industries.
In recent years anomalous proliferations of jellyfish are increasing in all seas: human envenomation by jellyfish toxins produce immediate toxicity (from minutes to few hours), with allergic responses, generally determining local symptoms (dermatitis, oedema and swelling, itching, stiffness, necrosis, pain) or more severe systemic effects.
