This project investigates the role of microbial communities in helping the water flea Daphnia adapt to environmental stressors like toxic cyanobacteria. By analyzing specific microbial genes, it aims to understand how these symbiotic relationships influence host resilience in changing aquatic ecosystems.
Metazoans are ubiquitously associated with microbial symbionts, which can provide direct benefits to their hosts, such as nutrients provisioning, protection against environmental stress, or enhancement of host digestive abilities.
These microbial mutualists have the ability to adapt rapidly to changing environments, and could potentially play a key role in the local adaptation of their host, especially in the context of rapid environmental changes imposed by human activities.
