This project investigates the role of a specific protein, Apolipoprotein L1, in immune response and its implications for diseases like sleeping sickness and chronic kidney disease. It aims to understand how this protein affects cell lifespan and explore potential therapeutic approaches.
Work conducted in my laboratory on the trypanosome killing factor of human serum led to the identificationof the primate-specific Apolipoprotein L1 (APOL1) as a novel pore-forming protein with striking similaritieswith proteins of the apoptotic BCL2 family.
