This project focuses on managing animal waste disposal in tanneries and slaughterhouses following the European Regulation prohibiting the use of mammalian protein in animal feeds. It aims to develop effective waste management strategies to mitigate the risks associated with animal by-products.
Before the implementation of the new European Regulation1 (3 October 2002) because the break out of Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE) most animal wastes were gathered by specialised companies for transforming them into other derivatives (i.e. feeding flour of animal origin) that have caused multiple problems of infections in all Europe known in the 90s as “Mad Cow Disease”.
