This project investigates how plants respond to shade by analyzing the molecular mechanisms behind the shade avoidance syndrome. It focuses on the roles of specific genes and their interactions in regulating plant growth and development in response to reduced light quality.
Plants perceive the presence of dense vegetation as a change in light quality, i.e., a reduced red to far-red (R:FR) ratio.
The responses to shade are generally referred to as the shade avoidance syndrome (SAS), and involve various changes in growth and physiology intended to overgrow or survive neighboring plants.
