This project investigates the biocontrol properties of specific plant-associated bacteria to combat plant diseases caused by fungi and oomycetes. By characterizing these bacteria and their bioactive compounds, the research aims to enhance sustainable agricultural practices through natural disease management strategies.
Fungi cause frequent and costly plant diseases which are extremely difficult to control.
An attractive approach to this environmental problem is to exploit the biocontrol properties of plant-associated bacteria.
The Salmond group has access to two plant associated strains of Serratia and a rhizosphere strain of Pantoea which present high antagonistic activity toward plant pathogenic oomycete and fungi, respectively.
