This project focuses on improving the precision of distance measurements to Type Ia supernovae by utilizing near-infrared observations. By developing advanced models that integrate optical and near-infrared data, the project aims to enhance our understanding of cosmic expansion and dark energy properties.
Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) are used as “standardiseable candles”: their peak luminosities can be inferred from their optical light curve shapes and colours, so their distances can be estimated from their apparent brightnesses.
