BEST aims to explore the historical influences of Chinese sources on the development of Tibetan Buddhism. By analyzing manuscripts from Dunhuang, the project seeks to uncover the complex interactions between Tibetan and Chinese cultures during the transmission of Buddhism.
Modern scholarship follows emic accounts in situating the origins of Tibetan Buddhism squarely in India, tacitly accepting Tibets claim to be heir to the orthodox tradi-tion.
