The BICYCLE project investigates the recycling of iron from marine sediments in oxygen-depleted ocean regions. It aims to understand how this process affects ocean productivity and biogeochemistry, particularly in areas like the Peru upwelling zone, by analyzing iron concentrations and isotopes in sediments.
Iron (Fe) supply is the limiting factor for primary productivity over vast areas of the modern ocean.
In the classical view, river runoff and wind-blown terrestrially derived dust are considered the main sources of bio-available Fe to the ocean.
