This project focuses on understanding centromere function and identity, essential for chromosome stability. By studying the CENH3 histone variant, it aims to develop improved artificial chromosomes for applications in gene therapy.
The centromere is one of the most important chromosomal elements.
It is required for proper chromosome segregation in mitosis and meiosis and readily recognizable as the primary constriction of mitotic chromosomes.
Proper centromere function is essential to ensure genome stability; therefore understanding centromere identity is directly relevant to cancer biology and gene therapy.
