This project aims to assess the role of the Gulf of Trieste in carbon cycling by measuring air-sea carbon dioxide fluxes. It seeks to determine whether this coastal region acts as a carbon sink or source, influenced by environmental factors such as freshwater input and phytoplankton blooms.
Coastal marine regions such as the Gulf of Trieste (GOT) in the Northern Adriatic Sea serve as the link between carbon cycling on land and the ocean interior and potentially contribute large uncertainties in the estimate of anthropogenic CO2 uptake.
This system may be either a sink or a source for atmospheric CO2.
