Several large prospective studies established that high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) is an independent negative risk factor for CHD thus representing today’s major protective factor against atherosclerosis, mostly attributable to their roles in ‘Reverse Cholesterol Transport (RCT)’.
