This project investigates the role of the beta-3 integrin protein in macrophages, focusing on its influence on inflammation and atherosclerosis in mice. By utilizing advanced genetic techniques, the research aims to clarify how beta-3 integrin signaling affects immune responses and vascular health.
Integrins play a key role in the binding of cells to the extra-cellular matrix, cell migration, cell-cell adhesion and cell-cell signaling.
The ß3-integrin subunit is expressed in a wide range of tissues. β3 integrins occur i.e. as αvβ3 in various cell types but as αIIβ3 exclusively in megakaryo/-thrombocytes.
