This project investigates the role of DNA demethylation in cancer, particularly under hypoxic conditions. It explores how oxygen levels affect TET hydroxylase activity and the implications for tumor biology, aiming to clarify the relationship between hypoxia, DNA methylation, and cancer progression.
DNA methylation was originally described in the 1970s as an epigenetic mark involved in transcriptional silencing, but the existence of DNA demethylation and the enzymes involved in this process were only recently discovered.
