This project explores Ireland's unique engagement with classical cultures from ancient Greece and Rome. It examines historical themes to understand how classical reception has influenced Irish literature and society, while addressing contemporary issues related to Ireland's divided history.
The hypothesis of this project is that Ireland has a unique and hitherto underexplored history of cultural engagement with models from ancient Greece and Rome.
Unlike Britain and mainland Europe, Ireland was never part of the Roman Empire.
Yet the island has an extraordinarily vibrant tradition of classical learning that dates back to its earliest recorded literature, and is unparalleled in other northern European countries.
