This historical research examines the geopolitical and cultural impacts of coal in the Middle East during the nineteenth century, highlighting the interplay between British colonialism and fossil fuel markets. It aims to reveal the historical significance of coal in shaping modern politics.
This is a multi-sited historical research into the geopolitical, social, and cultural implications of energy shifts during the long nineteenth century (1800-1911).
Combining perspectives from archives in London, Istanbul, Cairo, and Jerusalem, I retrieve the so far ignored “age of coal” in the Middle East.
