The COMPASS project explores the functions of prokaryotic Argonaute proteins, which are believed to play roles in DNA interactions and gene regulation. By mapping these proteins' mechanisms, the project aims to uncover their evolutionary significance and potential applications in genetic engineering.
Eukaryotic Argonaute proteins are known for their central role in RNA interference pathways.
Yet, the evolutionary origin of Argonaute proteins lies in prokaryotes, where other proteins essential for RNA interference are absent.
