This project focuses on recycling mixed plastic waste into a valuable hydrocarbon called Plaxx. The goal is to improve the recycling process to handle higher contamination levels, thereby reducing plastic waste and promoting environmental sustainability.
Global production for plastic has grown to over 300Mt/year and rising.
However, only 14% of plastic packaging is collected for recycling, and plastic packaging with an economic value of €70-110 billion is lost annually to the economy after just a short use.
The vast majority of plastic is still disposed of by incineration or landfill, with in excess of 8Mt leaking into the oceans each year.
It is estimated that by 2050 there will be more plastic than fish in the ocean.
