This project investigates the evolutionary history of endogenous retroviruses (ERVs) and their relationship with exogenous retroviruses (XRVs). By analyzing mammalian genomes, it aims to understand cross-species transmission and the factors influencing viral adaptations.
Endogenous retroviruses (ERVs) are DNA fragments found dispersed in a wide range of genomes, from invertebrates to mammals, that resemble members of the Retroviridae viral family (termed here exogenous retroviruses or XRVs).
