This project investigates blue-green algae in Bulgarian freshwater bodies, focusing on their toxic potential and ecological risks. It aims to identify species, analyze toxin production, and evaluate health implications, particularly in water used for drinking and recreation.
Blue-green algae (Cyanoprokaryota) are increasingly gaining importance in view of health hazards and ecological risks caused by secondary metabolites with toxic properties named “cyanotoxins”.
More than 40 Cyanoprokaryota species are capable to form blooms and produce cyanotoxins.
