This project focuses on developing a targeted therapy for autoimmune diseases by utilizing the tolerogenic potential of dermal macrophages. By employing arbovirus envelope proteins to deliver antigens, the aim is to modulate immune responses while preserving the body's ability to combat infections and cancer.
Autoimmune diseases originate from a breakdown in tolerance leading to immune responses against self antigens and chronic inflammation.
The main effector cells are self-specific T cells and B cells, the latter producing auto-antibodies.
This results in progressive destruction of organs.
