This project develops new therapies for posttraumatic stress disorder by exploring how memories of trauma can be modified. Using neuroimaging and behavioral tasks, it aims to disrupt the reconsolidation of traumatic memories to reduce intrusive thoughts.
A hallmark symptom of posttraumatic stress disorder involves ‘recurrent, involuntary and intrusive memories of the traumatic event’, in their most extreme form referred to as ‘flashbacks’.
At present, effective interventions to prevent the development of intrusive memory after trauma are lacking.
