This project investigates how herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2) affects vaginal mucosal integrity and its role in increasing susceptibility to HIV-1 infection. Using mouse models, it aims to understand the mechanisms behind this interaction, potentially leading to new preventive therapies for HIV.
Globally, more than 40 million people are currently infected with HIV-1, with the vast majority of infections initiated at mucosal surfaces and approximately half of the world people now living with HIV are women.
Herpes simplex type 2 (HSV-2) is one of the most common sexually transmitted viral diseases (STD) with an estimated prevalence of up to 50% among the female population worldwide giving rise to genital lesions and ulcers.
