This project aims to reconstruct changes in the Earth's geomagnetic field over the past five million years by measuring cosmogenic beryllium-10 in sediment cores. It seeks to clarify the mechanisms behind geomagnetic reversals and fluctuations in dipole strength.
Ancient records of the geomagnetic field intensity provide the unique source of information on the evolution of the geodynamo.
The paleomagnetic data contain a broad spectrum of dipole moment fluctuations with polarity reversals and excursions that typically occur during periods of very low field intensity, but the amplitude and the timing of the variations as well as critical features remain debated.
