EFESTO4EU focuses on recycling rare earth elements from end-of-life products to mitigate supply risks and environmental impacts. The project aims to develop innovative extraction methods using sustainable technologies, contributing to a circular economy and reducing reliance on mining.
Raw materials are pivotal in realizing the United Nations' '2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development' and its 17 Sustainable Development Goals.
Among these critical raw materials (CRMs), are of strategic importance to the EU's economy.
However, they face significant supply risks, particularly Rare Earth Elements (REEs), vital in emerging clean technologies.
Dependence on REE imports, coupled with geopolitical instability, has driven price spikes, prompting the need for recycling.
