This project studies the eco-physiological mechanisms behind the resilience of leafcutter ants' fungal crops in varying environments. By mapping nutrient and stress gradients, the project aims to uncover the genetic and biochemical pathways that influence cultivar performance and adaptability.
Domesticated crops hardly resemble their wild ancestors, and often trade higher yield in artificially optimized conditions for lower performance in fluctuating environments.
