The EUWaste project focuses on improving hazardous waste management through innovative gasification technology. This method allows for the safe conversion of various hazardous wastes into synthetic gas, which can be used for energy production, thereby reducing environmental impact.
On average one person in Europe uses 16 tonnes of material per year, of which 6 tonnes become waste.
In 2010, total waste production in the EU amounted to 2,5 billion tons.
From this total only a limited (albeit increasing) share (36%) was recycled, with the rest was landfilled or burned, of which some 600 million tons could be recycled or reused.
From total amount 100 million tonnes is hazardous, containing heavy metals and other toxins.
