This project investigates the strength and rheology of the continental lower crust, focusing on how water content affects rock behavior during tectonic events. It employs a multi-disciplinary approach to model strength evolution from rifting to continental collision.
Our knowledge of the geological evolution of continents, as well as of earthquake cycles and distribution, depends on a thorough understanding of continental strength and rheology.
However, there is no scientific consensus about variation of strength with depth, and it seems unlikely that a single rheological model can be applied to the continental lithosphere.
