This project investigates the genetic changes that led to multicellularity and cell specialization in the Dictyostelia group. By examining the evolution of cell signaling and gene expression, researchers aim to understand how unicellular organisms transitioned to complex multicellular forms.
The evolution of multicellularity allowed specialization of cells into functions that support rather than cause propagation.
While yielding immense gain of function, the organisation of these somatic cells into tissues and organs required novel cell-cell signalling systems.
