This project investigates the function of globin X in fish red blood cells, focusing on its role in sodium/proton exchange and oxygen transport. It aims to uncover how this mechanism affects fish adaptation to environmental challenges.
The aim of the project is to understand the function of globin X (GbX) in the activation of the sodium/proton exchange across the erythrocyte membrane of fish.
This exchange is oxygen dependent and activated by adrenergic stimulation; however the exact mechanism is unknown.
It has been suggested that membrane binding of haemoglobin would be involved but such haemoglobin has not been found yet.Recently we found that GbX mRNA is expressed in red blood cells of fish.
