This project aims to develop rapid detection methods for multidrug-resistant and extensively drug-resistant tuberculosis strains. It focuses on creating a colorimetric assay and a molecular tool for quick diagnosis, which will enhance treatment options for affected patients, particularly those with HIV.
Tuberculosis (TB) continues being a leading cause of death due to a single infectious disease agent.
The HIV/AIDS pandemic and the emergence of drug resistance are compounding factors that hinder the control of the disease.
Associated with this problem is the emergence of multidrug-resistant (MDR) strains of Mycobacterium tuberculosis, defined as strains resistant to at least isoniazid and rifampicin, the most valuable drugs in the treatment of the disease.
