This project addresses the environmental impacts of commercial fishing, particularly focusing on unwanted catches and benthic ecosystems in the Northwest Mediterranean. By gathering data and engaging stakeholders, it aims to develop sustainable fishing strategies that balance ecological health with societal needs.
There is an urgent need to address the environmental effects of fishing in order to maintain healthy marine ecosystems that provide the services societies want and need.
This problem is addressed in the new Common Fisheries Policy by encouraging the adoption of an Ecosystem Approach to Fisheries, including as a matter of priority the reduction of unwanted catches.
