This project explores how cuttlefish use polarized light for communication and navigation. It investigates the effects of environmental factors like turbidity on their ability to perceive polarized signals and the underlying neural mechanisms involved.
Polarisation information is only accessible to a part of the animal kingdom.
Available on land and underwater, it is used in a wide range of behaviours such as navigation, object recognition, foraging, or communication.
Polarised information can derive either from the environment or from plant or animal reflective features and, in the latter case, it may be subject to selective pressure.
However, the information conveyed by polarisation signals in any species is poorly understood.
