This project investigates the role of autophagy in strawberry plants under heat and drought stress. By enhancing autophagy through genetic editing, the research aims to develop strawberry varieties with improved stress resistance and fruit quality.
Autophagy, the major catabolic pathway in eukaryotic cells, has a role in the resistance to biotic and abiotic stresses in different plant species.
Plenty of studies show that blocking autophagy by knocking out some of its essential genes leads to plants highly susceptible to this stresses (including heat and drought).
However, there are much less studies about the effect of autophagy induction on the response of plants to stresses.
