This project seeks to understand metal friction and lubrication by developing a multi-scale model that accounts for phenomena from atomic to macro-scale. The goal is to improve lubrication strategies, particularly using graphene, to reduce energy losses in industrial applications.
Friction and wear are liable for enormous losses in terms of energy and resources in modern society.
Costs related to unwanted friction in industrialised countries are estimated to be about 3% of the gross domestic product.
