This project investigates how worldviews shape cognition and communication, particularly in moral and political contexts. It explores the roles of metaphor and narrative in understanding conflicts between differing ideological perspectives.
The problem of worldview in cognitive science concerns how high-level conceptual structures govern lower-level interpretation, emotion, reasoning, and discourse.
Due to this top-down influence, when worldviews conflict people often literally cannot understand the “other side,” and may attribute their beliefs and values to non-cognitive causes (personal interest, conformity, ignorance). “Culture wars” arise when moral-political worldviews compete.
