This project focuses on the development of new tools and techniques to study the roles of the enzymes glutamate carboxypeptidase II and III in neurodegeneration and cancer. It aims to create specific inhibitors and assays to better understand their physiological functions and potential therapeutic applications.
Glutamate carboxypeptidase II (GCPII) is a membrane-bound metallopeptidase with a vast pharmacological potential.
Given the intimate involvement of the enzyme in neurotransmission under normal physiological conditions, it is not surprising that GCPII-specific inhibitors are neuroprotective in multiple preclinical models of neurodegeneration.
