GOFIXIT aims to enable biological nitrogen fixation in food crops by establishing a recombinant production system for a complete nitrogenase enzyme. This technology seeks to reduce reliance on industrial nitrogen fertilizers, addressing ecological issues associated with their production and use.
Biological nitrogen fixation is nature’s alternative to the industrial Haber-Bosch process that currently feeds at least half of the human world population through the provision of nitrogen fertilizers.
