The HAIC project aims to enhance the safety of commercial aircraft flying near deep convective clouds by developing technologies for ice particle detection and awareness. It focuses on creating compliance methods and testing capabilities to address mixed phase and glaciated icing threats in aviation.
Commercial aircraft have been experiencing in-service events while flying in the vicinity of deep convective clouds since at least the early 1990s.
