This project explores natural photonic structures found in various organisms to inspire the development of new optical devices. By studying the unique properties of these structures, particularly in scarab beetles, it aims to create innovative applications in sensors and anti-counterfeiting technologies.
Natural photonic structures are present in a wide variety of flora and fauna, and are useful for camouflage mechanisms,mating and pollination signalling among other biological purposes.
These natural photonic architectures constitute aninvaluable source of blueprints for scientists to innovate in bio-inspired technological devices that can make a real impact inthe technology based economy, for example in sensors, solar cells and lighting applications.
