HELIOS focuses on developing paired synthetic photoelectrochemical reactions to efficiently convert inexpensive feedstocks into valuable complex organic molecules, such as pharmaceuticals. By optimizing both half-reactions, the project aims to enhance sustainability and selectivity in synthetic processes.
The synergy of visible light and electrical energy has been employed for decades in water splitting to hydrogen, but only recently was used to power the synthesis of higher value complex organic molecules (natural products, pharmaceuticals).
