The project investigates the role of low-abundance bacterial populations, known as the 'rare biosphere', in coastal ecosystems. Using advanced techniques, it aims to understand their interactions and contributions to microbial food webs and biogeochemical cycles, particularly in European coastal waters.
The recent discovery of a large number of low abundance bacterial phylotypes, coined the ‘rare biosphere’, coexisting next to a few abundant phylotypes raises a number of fundamental questions concerning their role in the microbial food web and their functioning in the biogeochemical cycles, mainly driven by prokaryotes in the ocean.
