This research investigates the resistance of Pacific oysters to herpes virus infections, which have caused significant mortality in European populations. By using RNA sequencing, the project aims to identify genetic traits associated with disease resistance to inform selective breeding programs.
The Pacific oyster is the most commercially important oyster in Europe.
In recent years large mortalities of this oyster have had a significant economic impact in a number of European countries.
Though in many cases due to a range of complex aetiologies one of the main factors associated with these mortalities has been the presence of a herpes virus.
