This project focuses on analyzing deep Near-Infrared imaging data from new telescopes to study high redshift galaxies, specifically those at redshifts between 2 and 11. It aims to understand galaxy evolution, luminosity functions, and the role of galaxies in cosmic re-ionization.
Studies of high redshift galaxies require very deep Near-IR imaging.
This allows the study of z=2-4 galaxies redward of the Balmer/4000 Angstrom break, and the detection of UV-bright galaxies at z>7.
Two new facilities wil revolutionize these studies: the VISTA telescope built for ESO, and the Near-IR channel on WF3 for HST.
They will become available at the start of the grant period.
We propose to build a group to analyze the imaging data from these facilities.
