The project investigates the immune response in Type 1 Diabetes during a unique phase called the 'honeymoon', where insulin needs decrease. It aims to characterize specific immune cells involved in this phase to improve understanding and treatment of the disease.
Type 1 Diabetes (T1D) is a metabolic disease that results from the autoimmune attack against insulin-producing β-cells in the pancreatic islets of Langerhans. T1D usually comprises a phase called ‘honeymoon’, an interesting though poorly studied period of the disease where exogenous insulin requirements are decreased, postulating a possible attempt of β-cell regeneration and a remission of the autoimmunity.
