This project investigates the role of tryptophan catabolism in tumor progression and immune response. It focuses on identifying transport proteins for tryptophan and its breakdown product kynurenine, which could serve as therapeutic targets for aggressive brain cancers and other disorders.
The catabolism of the essential amino acid tryptophan (Trp) by tumour cells expressing either IDO1/2 or TDO has been associated with malignant tumour progression and poor patient survival.
Expression of these rate-limiting genes leads to both depletion of Trp and accumulation of the Trp breakdown product kynurenine (Kyn) in the tumour microenvironment.
